Last Chance to Enjoy Your Life!

It may sound brash, but this is the last week you have to enjoy your life. No, really – on Monday 3rd July the popular Jürgen Teller exhibition at Martin Gropius Bau will close its doors forever, but with a name like ‘Enjoy Your Life!’ who would want to miss it?

Starting his career as a bowmaker, Teller went on to study photography in Munich, before moving to London in 1986, where he has lived and worked ever since. Immediately at home there taking photographs for trendy art and music magazines, Teller was catapulted to fame in the early nineties when he accompanied infamous grunge band Nirvana on their ‘Nevermind’ tour. His emphatic portraits of iconic lead singer Kurt Cobain set the stage for his specialty – his portraits capturing hundreds of both famous and everyday people in deceivingly simplistic but arresting ways.

Fast forward to 2015 when Teller shot Kanye West and Kim Kardashian at the the Château d’Ambleville in France for the photo book Kanye, Juergen & Kim. Not content with the picturesque castle as a backdrop, Teller decided to venture out into the surrounding countryside, directing Kim to pose (among other settings) against a pile of rubble. The episode was labelled by Dazed magazine as “arguably one of the most bizarre pop culture moments of 2015”. Teller’s ability to coax people into baring their personalities, is a trait which sets him apart from other artists, contributing to his longevity as one of the most sought after contemporary photographers today.

Featuring around 250 images,  ‘Enjoy Your Life!’ is an all encompassing mix of Teller’s impressive back catalogue and runs until 3rd July – don’t miss your chance to glimpse the life and encounters of this extraordinary character.

The exhibition Juergen Teller. Enjoy Your Life! closes next week on Monday the 3rd of July. It’s open Wednesday to Monday from 10am  to 7pm and adult admission is €10. Martin Gropius Bau is at Neiderkirchnerstrasse 7 in Kreuzberg.
