This month sees the opening of the first photographic exhibition in Berlin by the legendary photographer Mario Testino, famed for his work for the likes of Vogue magazine and Vanity Fair. The exhibition of 125 images, which Testino himself helped select and arrange, is all about juxtaposition: so, celebrity portraits of the Rolling Stones, for example, will hang next to informal snapshots; provocative nudes alongside glamourous fashion shots.
“This particular hanging style for these photographic works allows all of these different aspects of my curiosity to have a conversation,” Testino says about the exhibition. “They not only exist on their own but trigger a reaction when being next to each other.”
The famously flamboyant 60-year old Testino, born in Peru, studied photography in London in the 1970s, and was one of the photographers at the forefront of the extraordinary 1980s supermodels era that propelled the likes of Kate Moss, Claudia Schiffer Naomi Campell and Eva Herzigova to superstar status. He is in high demand photographing actresses and pop stars, and is also something of a favourite with the British Royal family.
The timing of the exhibition is perfect – a large helping of glitz and glamour and in the cold grey Berlin mid-winter. Beautifully arranged over a series of dark walled rooms, In Your Face is like walking through the pages of the world’s best magazine.
The exhibition offers a peek into Testino’s enviable, star-studded lifestyle: a chance to mingle with the stars and the beautiful people for an hour so. In fact, not unlike being in the lobby of the Sofitel Ku’damm.
Mario Testino: In Your Face; from 20.01.2015 to 26.07.2015, Kunstbibliokthek, Kulturforum, Matthäikirchplatz, Berlin
